Bluetooth Wireless In Your Home Office

Bluetooth is a wireless communication protocol that provides wireless data sharing between Bluetooth enabled devices. Unlike Wi-Fi, which requires more power to operate and a separate configuration for each device, Bluetooth requires less power consumption, is relatively simple to use, and is designed in a small area. A network of devices around Bluetooth is called a PAN or private area network.

Although technology has been around for over ten years, its use has gradually grown, and relatively few people take full advantage of the many possibilities it offers. One great use of Bluetooth technology for the customer is in the home office.

Transforming a typical home office into wireless technology is fairly straightforward and simple. It does not require programming skills or advanced computer skills.

When converting your home office to Bluetooth wireless, the first order of business is to get an adapter for your computer. This is a small device that plugs into your computer's USB port and allows your computer to communicate with Bluetooth components. Many of these adapters (or dongles) are similar to the popular USB flash drives. The adapter becomes "Master" and is capable of communicating up to seven Bluetooth enabled devices. They are manufactured and readily available by many reputable companies like D-Link and Linksys in the wireless industry.

Going forward, you may want to consider a wireless mouse and keyboard. These devices must be purchased with pre-installed Bluetooth technology (there are no converters for these components). There are a significant number of them on the market and many are basically the same. Your choice must be one of personal preference, and since these are separate devices, there is no need to replace both. Some of the most popular models have been developed by Logitech and Microsoft.

The next step is the printer. There are several new Bluetooth enabled printers on the market, and many choose a printer adapter that does the same thing. If you're in the market for a new printer, it makes sense to buy one that already has Bluetooth capability. If not, adapters are readily available for most printers. They are similar to a computer adapter and insert a printer into the USB port. There are also several models that use parallel port for older printers.

Congratulations - you have now set up your personal area network. However, the further trouble with wires and cables is just the beginning. This is where the real beauty and functionality of Bluetooth lies. You now have a PAN that works well with any Bluetooth enabled device. Upload and download data from your PDA without wires. Upload and print photos with a wireless Bluetooth enabled digital camera. Print documents from your laptop computer without cable. If you enjoy music while you're working, there's a Bluetooth-enabled stereo headphone.

It is a great technology with endless possibilities for both produc productivity and fun.
